Group Tutorials

Today i presented my cop proposal and work i have done so far to my tutor and small group of peers. I got some really useful feedback from this session.

• Comparison of target audience i.e. is it worse if the target audience is male and it has feminist issues or if the film is targeted towards women and has feminist issues. I think this is a really good point which could be the main focus of my essay. A lot of women believe that rom coms are empowering for women but they are actually showing them they can only be truly happy if they have a partner. Even in Sex in the City, 4 independent women that all own their own apartments and have successful jobs, their lives fall apart when they are dumped or sole action is to gain one. This gives women the wrong impression as it is not normal to be single. The ugly truth shows this a lot, katherine heigl is a successful business woman who lives on her own with a cat, until Gerard Butler swoops in and totally discredits her as being normal, changing her whole physical look and outlook on life, and eventually breaks down this independent woman to the point in which she is crying on the floor of her cupboard in her office.
• The opinions of the actresses - a good contrast between what i am saying would be to get the opinions of the actresses playing the role. for instance, Angelina Jolie talks about her role as Lara Croft with a feminist view, she's a woman with a powerful lead role in a film etc. I think this would be really interesting to look at as I see Lara Croft Tomb Raider as really sexist and focuses on the male gaze, but Angelina Jolie is now a humanitarian, so it would be interesting to see her view.
• write down quotes on the gaze from different theorists.
• Research general feminist theory.
• Exploitation/film nasty
• Conflicting views on genre
• Practical - Education/activity pack/ colouring books/ function

I have found this session really helpful so i can move on with my project.

To start moving forward with the writing side, i am going to identify 10 things that i would like to say about critical analysis, so my views, opinions, observations of gender roles and feminism within the genres

And 10 things i would like to say about case studies, ie. films that support these opinions etc.

I am going to choose 2 films from each genre to compare and triangulate my points too.
